Thor: The Dark World

Production

Director: Alan Taylor
Produced: Kevin Feige
Distributed by: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Budget:

Thor 2 has been long anticipated after its prequels Thor and the Avengers. Because of how successful its prequels were, Marvel decided to produce a sequel in hopes of making an even bigger profit.
It is Marvel's tent pole movie this year and they hope to make a marginal profit from it. It was released on 30th October 2013 and gained a lot of attention at the premiere at Odeon Leicester Square. The main stars of this production are Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston who play the three main characters; Thor, Jane and Loki. The actors involved in the film also contribute to attracting an audience as well known actors may influence an audiences decision to see the movie. The film was shot in London and Iceland and was seen as an extensive film project. The director also plays a part in encouraging an audience to view the film as Alan Taylor is known for directing Games Of Thrones which was a massive hit. It contains cross media convergence as it first started out as a comic that was then developed into a film and branches out into other areas of Marvel.

Marketing/Distribution

To promote Thor 2; The Dark World, Marvel released a teaser trailer in April 2013 which played for 106 seconds to entice the audience. It features the main characters from the prequel along with clips of main action scenes from the movie Later on in August of the same year, a second trailer was released which extends on the previous trailer, making audiences anticipate the movie. At the 2013 San-Diego Comic Con, Tom Hiddleston dressed up as Loki and introduced official footage from the film to further promote it. Disneyland also announced plans to create an attraction called 'Treasures of Asgard' which takes inspiration from the movie. Its audience has also helped to distribute the movie by advertising it on social networking sites such as Tumblr and Facebook.

In the month leading up to the release of the movie, various posters and advertisements were seen all over the UK. This includes advertisements in cinema's, on TV and posters; it has a massive marketing campaign. It is being advertised nation wide, mainly marketed in the UK and America. Above are posters shown in the UK and America. Synergy is used throughout the film posters for Thor. All the posters contain the same font alongside the Marvel logo above the title. They also feature the same people form the previous Thor movie with a new character to entice the audience. The main characters, Thor and Jane, are also seen wearing the same costume throughout the film posters. A colour scheme is also consistent in the posters. A light brown is seen in all the posters to create a similarity between them and alert the audience that they are promoting the same film. Lego helped to promote the film by producing a poster identical the first shown above but with Lego characters; badges with a Lego Thor featured and Lego actions figures of the characters which creates synergy To help promotes the film, action figures of the main characters from Thor are also being distributed from Marvel which is an example of cross media convergence. Gameloft also produced a game based on Thor: The Dark World for IOS and Android to appeal to a wider audience.

Exhibition

Thor was released all over the UK on October 30th  and November 8th 2013 in America. The film is going to be shown internationally into IMAX 3D cinemas internationally as it was digitally remastered into the IMAX 3D format. It made $109.4 million from around 70% of the worldwide marketplace.

THOR 2

Thor is an important movie of the year as it has a massive marketing campaign for the sequel that goes with the hit film The Avengers. Marvel addicts and comic lovers (mainly young males) are on their toes to get tickets to this movie on the day it comes out, 30th of October 2013 making it a tent pole movie. There is massive hype on the stars playing the characters and how the movie is gonna turn out with overwhelming CGI and special effects as well as the fact that it's available in 3D giving worldwide audiences a realistic experience. Trailers are out on youtube, TV and news reporters are sure to interview the stars. Social media is on the trend too where Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and other platforms are pouring with posts and statuses making sure everyone knows about it. BBC news even aired a interview of the premier of Thor 2 where Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston as well as two broke girls star Kat Dennings who I'm a fan of dressed amazingly and looked beautiful giving their thoughts on the film. Its a film to watch so make sure you're there!

Swede presentation summary

Our presentation included a lot of key information/points about the movie industry. We learnt to use convergent technology throughout the swede.

  • In terms of productions we used mobile phones, cameras and softwares on the computers
  • In terms of distributions and marketing we made posters that will go on billboards, buses, trains etc..We used social media sites/ platforms and posted statuses on Facebook, twitter, whatsapp, instagram, tumblr and BBM and obviously to get our audience to  spot and view our final product we posted it  on youtube to gain as many viewers as possible.
  • When talking about exchange our audiences got involve in discussing and making comments on our swede through the social medias the swede has been exhibited onto.

Tent poles

A film that is expected to be very successful. In other words films that are made to make a lot of profit in order to make up for the loss of money from other movies. Our swede on the other hand is definitely not a tent pole because we did not make money out of it. It strictly for work purpose.

Prosumers

This all about a consumer who becomes involved with designing or customizing products. My group and I were prosumers because we produced our own swede and using different social networks/ medias we marketed( promoted), in other words distributed /exhibited our finishing swede.

Media consumption

My group and I consumed various type of medias to get ideas about our own swede in order to produce it well. Media consumption was somehow a form of inspiration to us.

Cross media convergence

Different media that promote each other and usually wouldn't exist without each other. e.g comics

Synergy

this is where products use visual synergy/ visual synergy through imagery, font, sound, posters, podcast and adverts.

Audience

Our audience spot our swede on YouTube and participated in discussion about in the social networks, posted comments and liked our swede on the YouTube site . We got 301+ views and 7 likes in the space of 1 week.

Global distribution

The fact that we posted our swede on YouTube it is globally distributed meaning that it is available for a world wide audience to view.

Swede Presentation Summary

After completing our swede and showing our presentation, we reviewed what we did well and what we could improve on. After posting the swede on YouTube we managed to get 301+ views, various likes and a positive comment. We mentioned different things during our presentation that related to the film industry, which are listed bellow.

  1. Convergent technologies
  •  Production - We used the cameras and computer software to shoot and edit our film
  •  Distribution - Used YouTube and other online resources to distribute our film
  •  Marketing - Advertisements such as posters and social media to make people aware of our swede
  •  Exhibition  - Posted the swede on YouTube along with social networks to get feedback
     2. Tent pole movies
  •  A massive release of a movie that a company believes will make a huge profit to make up for the loss of money from other movies
  • Our swede would not be considered a tent pole movie as we didn't produce it to make a profit
     3. Prosumers
  • Through the process of creating our swede, we became prosumers by consuming different types of media and producing our own swede
     4. Media Consumption
  • We consumed a variety of different medias to develop our own swede and take inspiration from them
     5. Cross media convergence
  • Different media that promote each other, they usually wouldn't exist without each other e.g. comics and films
     6. Synergy
  • Different companies promoting the same film e.g. McDonalds Happy Meal toys promotes a  child's films but McDonalds is not related to the company who produced the film. Both products make money by promoting each other
  • Visual synergy - Consistent theme throughout; imagery, font and sound are the same for a movie; we didn't have synergy in our marketing but we know to use it in the future
     7. Audience
  • The people who view the film and give their feedback
     8. Global distribution
  • Making a film available for a world wide audience
  • By posting our film on Youtube we made it available to a global audience and not limiting who can view it

Swede Presentation Summary

Our swede generated over 300 views and is receiving positive feedback as an amateur movie giving us confidence to create bigger productions for potential audiences in the future. We gave a presentation to our whole class about all the areas of our swede and after our presentations and feedback, we talked about important points in our presentations that we have included such as..

- Convergent Technologies in
  • Production - Using cameras, mobile phones and computers and computer softwares
  • Marketing - Using advertisements and posters as well as social media sites
  • Distribution - Using Youtube and other platforms online such as tumblr and Facebook as well as word-of-mouth
  • Exchange - Using Youtube and links on other platforms and the comments or feedback from each platform
- Tent pole movies
Movies that generate the most money across a number of movies in a company to cover other movie losses.
- Prosumers
Using previous experience being consumers of the current media, we were able to develop our skills as producers. Using freaky friday as a whole movie and their methods of advertisement and production, we could portray our version of the movie in swedes form.
- Media Consumption
Consuming a variety and range of different media related to our swede as research and as a branch for new ideas and inspiration
- Cross media convergence
Using different media companies that promotes each other and usually wouldn't exist without each other being in the media and film institution. We couldn't use this for our project as no other group were involved in our marketing other than our own project members.
- Synergy where both products make money and use visual synergy through fonts, imagery and sounds etc.
  • podcasts
  • posters - we used a theme of fun and the colour green and yellow as a link to each other's posters.
  • sound
  • adverts
- Audience
Having people watch individually or as a group
- Global Distribution
The Youtube community expands worldwide giving us the exposure plus opportunities to capture a world audience.

Making a Swede

To create a swede you first have to pick a movie; our group chose 'Freaky Friday'. We thought that this film would be really good as it had a lot of funny scenes that we could recreate. We also can use key props from the movie such as the fortune cookie that 'changes everything'. I think our group will be able to make a good swede; even without a budget.

Swede Trailers

A swede is a low budget remake of a popular film. It shows key moments from the film but is often very low quality and made using cheap materials. Below are examples of swedes of 'Speed' and 'Iron Man' which I found entertaining.

Production, Distribution, Marketing and Exhibition

There are different stages involved in making a film. The stages help the film industry to create a successful film. These stages are:

Production:
The first step in making a film is an idea. The idea can be inspired by anything or anyone and can be of any genre i.e. action. Someone needs to have good, solid idea for a movie in order for it to be developed into a script. After the script has been made financial support for the film has to be provided in order for it to be made. Then a location has to be decided on, a crew and cast have to be hired along with people who will supple food, trailers and other necessary provisions. A lot of people are involved in this process; the director, the unit production manager, the assistant director, the casting director and many others. They all play an important role. Finally, the film can be shot and edited to complete this stage.

Distribution:
Distribution is about how the film gets to the audience from the edit house. Film festivals are a good way for new talent to showcase their film to possible film distributors who could invest in the film. From there it can be released into cinemas, or put onto DVD or Blu-ray. If a film is to be released at cinemas it will most likely be released on a weekend as opposed to a weekday.

Marketing:

Marketing is all about promoting and advertising a film to attract an audience. . A film can be promoted in most areas of the media. An effective way of promoting a film is screening its trailer before a movie starts. It will usually only be shown before a movie of the same target audience so it appeals directly to them. The print media is also good at publicising a film by using billboards, bus advertisements and posters. To promote films aimed at a younger audience, toys of the characters from a film are usually put into happy meals to encourage children to convince their parents to see said film.

Exhibition:
Exhibition is the final stage. It focuses on how to get the audience get to see films. A lot of films can be viewed in 3D or 4D to immerse the audience in the film. It also prevents people from creating pirate copies of a film as it distorts the video and makes it impossible to illegally record at cinemas. Seeing a film on a wide screen, for example at the Odeon, also enhances the viewing experience for the audience.
Films are also available for people to see online. Websites such as Love Film and Netflix allow people to see a film legally rather than downloading illegal copies from the internet. However, films are also available to see online for free whether its using a free trial on Netflix or watching on a site that is completely free.

Making of a Swede

A swede is a ridiculous, unfashionable, crass remake of a good movie and because the making of it is financially cheap, it just includes the key scenes from the movie, bad homemade props and silly quality of sounds.

My group and I want to make a swede of a movie called "Freaky Friday". We need use the right props, costumes, music and sounds. We haven't really all decided on all these together yet. On the other hand I still don't know what character I will act as yet. My group and I will however do everything we can to make this swede successful, good and funny.

Production:  Film production is all about the step by step way of making a film. It firstly starts with coming up with what the film is going to be about which goes by the name of the "ideas" people have about the film. Secondly the filmmaking involves the script writing then additionally casting follows which is basically the fact that filmmakers need to find people/ a crew to cast the film. This is really important because the director of the film need to find the right actors/ actresses suited for the roles he or she is  planning to give them. This will ensure high profit and success when talking how well the film will do. Furthermore there's the shooting process/filming which is just putting scenes together to create a film. After that, the editing and  screening comes in to complete the production before it gets advertised and released for people to see.

Distribution: This is basically just about how the films get from the edit house to the audience. In other words its all about the availability of a film for the public. Films are either distributed in cinemas, on the internet, on  DVDs and in film festivals.

Marketing: This  is the most important process of the movie industry. Its all about advertising and promoting movies. The more the movie gets promoted, the more likely you are going to make a profit out of it because a lot of people will spot the promoted/advertised film and will be more likely to pay to watch it due to for example their high interest in it because of the actors or actresses . People are aware of new movies through trailers, bus ads, food boxes e.g. happy meals, radios, billboards,  posters,  newspapers,  internets, social networks such as Facebook, twitter,  YouTube etc...

Exhibition: This is kind of similar to distribution however exhibition is how audiences get to see films. Nowadays a lot of people see films on the internet on film sites  such as lovefilm.com, 1channel, Netflix, YouTube etc. People watch films illegally online but they have to wait for a while after the film's release to watch it.  Films are also watched on DVDs which shows that even if people such teenagers, young  adults download/ watch films  illegally others still buy it before they watch it at home. To add to this cinema websites such as Odeon allows people to be aware of films so therefore others just pay to watch it in cinemas.
